Abstract: Fluorescece spectroelectrochemistry is used to probe redox process of benzoquinone. The benzoquinone reduction state has a lower fluorescence quantum efficiency. CVF and DCVF can reveal more information about benzoquinone redox reactions. This method can analyze compounds with fluorescence and electrochemical activities. Quinones are common organic compounds frequently used as model dissolved organic matters in water, and their redox properties are usually characterized by either electrochemical or spectroscopic methods separately. In this work, electrochemical methodology was combined with two fluorescence spectroelectrochemical techniques, cyclic volta- fluorescence spectrometry (CVF) and derivative cyclic volta- fluorescence spectrometry (DCVF), to determine the electrochemical properties of -benzoquinone in dimethyl sulfoxide, an aprotic solution. The CVF results show that the electrochemical reduction of -benzoquinone resulted in the formation of radical anion and dianion, which exhibited a lower fluorescence intensity and red-shift of the emission spectra compared to that of -benzoquinone. The fluorescence intensity was found to vary along with the electrochemical oxidation and reduction of -benzoquinone. The CVF and DCVF results were in good consistence. Thus, the combined method offers a powerful tool to investigate the electrochemical process of -benzoquinone and other natural organic compounds.

Probing the catalytic activity of M-N

Fan Ge, Qingan Qiao, Xin Chen, You Wu

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 5,   Pages 1206-1216 doi: 10.1007/s11705-020-2017-7

Abstract: In this work, the detailed oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic performance of M-N O (M= Fe, Co, and Ni; = 1–4) has been explored via the detailed density functional theory method. The results suggest that the formation energy of M-N O shows a good linear relationship with the number of doped O atoms. The adsorption manner of O on M-N O changed from end-on ( = 1 and 2) to side-on ( = 3 and 4), and the adsorption strength gradually increased. Based on the results for binding strength of ORR intermediates and the Gibbs free energy of ORR steps on the studied catalysts, we screened out two highly active ORR catalysts, namely Co-N O and Ni-N O , which possess very small overpotentials of 0.27 and 0.32 V, respectively. Such activities are higher than the precious Pt catalyst. Electronic structure analysis reveals one of the reasons for the higher activity of Co-N O and Ni-N O is that they have small energy gaps and moderate highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels. Furthermore, the results of the density of states reveal that the O doping can improve the electronic structure of the original catalyst to tune the adsorption of the ORR intermediates.

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2008, Volume 2, Issue 4,   Pages 395-400 doi: 10.1007/s11709-008-0046-2

Abstract: Based on accelerated carbonation test, 1D, 2D and 3D carbonation of high performance concrete with different fly ash contents (0%, 15%, 20%, 40%, 60%) were studied. The interaction coefficients of 2D and 3D carbonation are defined. The time-dependent coefficient of carbon dioxide diffusion and the interaction coefficients of 2D and 3D carbonation are analyzed. The mathematical model which includes and is deduced. The experiments indicate that 2D and 3D carbonation have obvious interaction. Interaction coefficients obey the attenuation function through time . The mathematical model of 2D and 3D carbonation life prediction based on Fick scattering law can be solved by Fourier expansion. The life prediction of concrete of Sutong Bridge beam shows that the 1D, 2D, 3D carbonation prediction life are 1595 a, 882 a and 758 a, respectively, 2D and 3D carbonation life predicted are reduced clearly.

Removable Dyes—The Missing Link for In-Depth N-glycan Analysis via Multi-Method Approaches

Samanta Cajic,René Hennig,Valerian Grote,Udo Reichl,Erdmann Rapp,

Engineering doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2023.02.016

Abstract: As the roles of glycans in health and disease continue to be unraveled, it is becoming apparent that glycans’ immense complexity cannot be ignored. To fully delineate glycan structures, we developed an integrative approach combining a set of cost-effective, widespread, and easy-to-handle analytical methods. The key feature of our workflow is the exploitation of a removable fluorescent label—exemplified by 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (Fmoc)—to bridge the gap between diverse glycoanalytical methods, especially multiplexed capillary gel electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detection (xCGE-LIF) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Through the detailed structural analysis of selected, dauntingly complex N-glycans from chicken ovalbumin, horse serum, and bovine transferrin, we illustrate the capabilities of the presented strategy. Moreover, this approach “visualizes” N-glycans that have been difficult to identify thus far—such as the sulfated glycans on human immunoglobulin A—including minute changes in glycan structures, potentially providing useful new targets for biomarker discovery.
